Coder is a self-hosted cloud development environment platform that runs on your infrastructure and helps developers and AI coding agents work side by side in secure, context-rich workspaces. Instead of setting up a local machine or waiting on manual environment configuration, teams can provision consistent development environments as code, so every workspace is ready for productive work from day one.

With Coder, organizations keep control over compute, network access, and isolation boundaries—making it practical to scale remote development and to deploy AI agents safely. Workspaces are defined using Terraform, enabling repeatable, auditable setups that match internal standards for security and compliance. When a developer (or agent) starts a workspace, Coder brings up the required resources and connects them to the tools your team already uses.

Coder supports popular workflows and editors, including Visual Studio Code, JetBrains Gateway, and direct SSH access, so developers can keep their preferred experience while working in a centrally managed environment. Administrators can also reduce cloud spend by automatically shutting down idle workspaces and reclaiming resources when they’re not in use.

Typical usage is straightforward: sign in with single sign-on, choose a template, create a workspace, and start coding. Because templates capture dependencies, services, and configuration, onboarding new team members or contractors becomes faster and more consistent, while sensitive code and data remain inside your controlled environment. more
